Websites don't fail loudly. They fail silently — a visitor arrives, hesitates, and leaves. You never hear about it. Here are the five leaks we find most often in UK small business websites, and what each is really costing you.
1. It takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone
Over 70% of your visitors are on mobile, and every extra second of loading loses roughly a third of them. Test yours now: open your site on your phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi. Count. If you got bored, so did your customers.
2. Your phone number needs hunting for
If a visitor has to scroll, open a menu, or visit a contact page to call you, a percentage simply won't. Your number (tap-to-call) belongs at the top of every page. For trades and services, this single fix often lifts enquiries within a week.
3. There's no reason to trust you
No reviews visible, no photos of real work, no faces, no accreditations. Buyers aren't comparing your website to a designer's portfolio — they're asking one question: "can I trust these people with my money?" If the page doesn't answer it, they find one that does.
4. Every page tries to say everything
A homepage that lists twelve services with equal weight sells none of them. Strong websites make one clear offer per page and give the visitor exactly one obvious next step. Confusion doesn't browse — it leaves.
5. Nothing happens after they enquire
The rawest leak of all: the form that emails an inbox nobody checks until evening. Speed-to-reply is the single biggest factor in winning enquiries — the business that responds within five minutes disproportionately wins the job. If you can't reply that fast, automation (instant acknowledgment, AI chat, calendar booking) can.
The 10-minute self-audit
Load your site on mobile data · find your phone number without scrolling · count visible reviews · ask a friend "what would you click first?" · submit your own form and time the response. If you failed two or more — that's fixable, and usually cheaply.
